Gwen Rand

Eisteddfod by the Bay Committee Member

Gwen Rand

My name is Gwen Rand and I am a fairly new member of the Eisteddfod by the Bay Committee. I joined the Committee firstly because I belong to a flourishing community choir and secondly because of my background, which I hope will make me a useful member of the group.

I grew up in Wales in a Welsh speaking family and Eisteddfods were a large part of my childhood, from the school and chapel occasions to the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen and the National Eisteddfod held in different towns in Wales each year. Choirs, of course, featured strongly in all these events. After school, I studied Music teaching at Cambridge and joined CUMS, which was the huge university choir. There I took for granted being conducted by David Wilcocks and Benjamin Britten, among others, and it was only as I got older that I realised what a privilege it was. I taught music in Norwich and Cambridge for a few years until I came with my husband to Australia for 3 years 40 years ago! During that time I have had three sons and managed to teach in various schools for the best part of 30 years. I have now retired and I look forward to this next stage in my life with my involvement in the Eisteddfod by the Bay Committee.
