Margaret Green

Eisteddfod by the Bay Pianoforte Coordinator

My youth was spent in a country town where my parents were involved in community affairs, in particular the Musical & Dramatic Society. This was my first introduction to the performing arts, as an actress, although my family background was musical.

My grandfather, mother and uncle were violinists, my aunt a pianist, my grandfather a music teacher and had a music shop in suburban Melbourne.

As a child I was taught piano by my mother and then by a local music teacher. I continued with the piano with Elise Fraser and Vera Heard as boarder at MLC Kew.

After my school days I returned home where I continued to be involved in the performing arts, and in 1959 moved with my husband to Melbourne. Our contribution to the community, during the time that our children were growing up, centered mainly on sporting clubs, football, cricket, softball, netball and school associations, but in 1984 I attended the Mordialloc Eisteddfod Prize Winners Concert in my position as a member of Beta Sigma Phi, a women's organization who had sponsored the Speech Championship and two Ballet Awards in the Eisteddfod that year. They have continued to support the Eisteddfod in various ways for twenty-six years.

I joined the committee of the Mordialloc Eisteddfod in 1986, coordinated a canteen with members of Beta Sigma Phi for the competitors and their families from 1986 to 1994, served as General Secretary from 1994 to 2006, and have been the Pianoforte Coordinator since 2001.
